As mobile network operators (MNOs) grow more complex and crowded macro networks, the risk of passive intermodula on (PIM) grows as well. PIM occurs when two or more wireless signals mix together and create addi onal frequencies that cause interference and deteriorate network performance. Some common causes of PIM are loose metal-to-metal contacts, poor quality components that rust or corrode, metal shavings or other site contamina on, nearby frequency sources (power lines/ equipment), or obstacles in the RF path. A major source of PIM at the top of the tower is the numerous non-RF path accessories like brackets, hangers, and mounts. The Hi-Risk PIM zone exists in close proximity to the antenna; in front, above, below, and even behind it. The zone is defined as: ten feet directly above or below the antenna, five feet behind the antenna, and one hundred feet in front of the antenna. Standard installa on prac ces and products must be modified within the Hi-Risk zone to avoid PIM. Many tradi onal installa on products have been iden fied as being PIM generators and must be eliminated. Why PIM-guard? 1. Reduces PIM while maximizing structural integrity 2. Provides end-to-end strategy 3. Enables network contractors and installers to improve the RF efficiency in their customers' evolving and complex networks PIM-guard solutions extend CommScope's industry-leading PIM protection to non-RF path installation accessories. PIM-guard components, like cable support brackets, hangers, RRU mou nts, roof mounts, cable bands, cable es, and tower adapters, are op mized to reduce PIM while maximizing structural integrity. From materials selection and corrosion resistance to the exterior contours and profile, PIM-guard reflects CommScope's experience and understanding of PIM's sources and solu ons. When combined with CommScope's PIM-figh ng RF path components, PIM-guard accessories provide an end-to-end strategy, enabling network contractors and installers to improve the RF efficiency in their customers' evolving and complex networks. Visit the Talley website to find the full CommScope PIM-guard family to experience how PIM-guard protects from the top of the tower to the bottom line.
